SCARECROW CONTEST!​


​​At this year's big games, the School Garden Network of Sonoma County is excited to host the Scarecrow Contest!

Anyone can participate. Just bring a homemade scarecrow to the Farmer Olympics and submit your entry by 5pm. 

Based on style and creativity, a panel of judges will award medals to the top three picks at 5:30pm as well as a special prize for this year's the gold medal winner.

T-POST POUNDING

(for experienced practitioners only)
Gather 'round to watch one of the most exciting olympic events of the year, the t-post pounding competition! In this game of brute strength, farmers and ranchers race to drive these ubiquitous fence posts into the ground. As always, this one's sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

UGLY PRODUCE BEAUTY PAGEANT

Crooked carrot in your garden? Speckled apple at the farmers market? How about a lopsided pumpkin on your farm? Bring them to the Farmer Olympics and enter to win this pageant of alternative and edible aesthetics!

Gold, silver and bronze medal winners will receive cookware from Lodge Cast Iron!

The Ugly Produce is Beautiful Educational Campaign works to increase the appreciation and consumption of “ugly” fruits & vegetables to reduce the resulting food waste and pollution.

BUTTER CHURNING

Picture
With fresh, organic cream from a local dairy, a single mason jar and a whole lotta shakin', you can make delicious butter all on your own! But can you do it faster than everyone else? Find out at the butter churning contest with Straus Family Creamery!
FARM HACK
This summer, the Farmers Guild teams up with the Chimera Art Space for a Farm Hack, uniting makers, engineers, artists and tinkerers with local farmers to think up--and then build solutions to on-farm challenges.
All welcome to participate. Final products will be debuted at the Farmer Olympics to a panel of judges.

HARVEST TIME GRAPE TOSS

Harvest is a bountiful time here in the North Bay, with plenty of extra grapes to gobble up! Grab a partner, grab a grape, and take aim with this can't miss game hosted by the Napa Farmers Guild.

PIPE DREAMS
COMPETITIVE IRRIGATION

For an authentic farming experience, check out the Grange School of Adaptive Agriculture's real-world tournament, Pipe Dreams, a fast-paced game of speedy hands, leaky spigots and water conservation for a sustainable harvest.


​EGG & SPOON RACE

An old-time favorite, the Egg & Spoon Relay will be hosted this year by our friends at Salmon Creek Ranch from Bodega, CA... with a little help from their 100% Certified Organic, free-ranging, cage-free, pasture-raised ducks.

SQUASH BOWLING


Perfect your aim for this harvest-time favorite with our friends from Farmster who believe that from the big actions to the small everyday acts, everyone has a role in creating a resilient, local food system, with happy healthy people.

WHEELBARROW RELAY

Get the carbon cycle moving with the Compost Coalition of Sonoma County in this down-and-dirty relay for soil-loving speed demons. Haul this gardener's black gold with your trusty partner and don't tip over the loot!

Gold medal winners receive five yards of Nicasio Blend from West Marin Compost!

HARVEST BINGO

Fill your basket with fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables with Harvest Bingo. Mark your card and win! Winners will receive a prize thanks to our friends at Community Alliance with Family Farmers.

​Always a favorite, sack up for this classic, all-ages game. Let the hay and hair fly and we'll see you at the finish line!


​HAYBALE STACKING

Test your brawn at this game of agrarian might. With some help from Rivertown Feed & Pet Country Store, watch as farmers and ranchers race to stack hay bales, going for gold.

FARM-TO-KIFIR

Join Redwood Hill Farm & Creamery for this live demo to learn the kifir-making process, from farm to glass.

FOOD LEXICON TRIVIA

Biodynamic? Cage-free? Food forest? Mob stocking? Test your food vocabulary at the Lexicon of Sustainability's word trivia game and go home ready to navigate the murky world of food labels.

FARM-FRESH
PIZZA TOPPING CONTEST
Try out your culinary chops and enter this epicurean competition. You bring the toppings and, with help from a mobile cob oven by Living Earth Structures, we'll cook up your creation for a panel of hungry judges.

RULES: We provide dough, oil, pepper and salt; all other toppings must be homegrown or purchased at the olympic farmers market.


​SEED MATCH

Can you tell a carrot seed from a lettuce seed? Find out at the Center for Land-Based Learning's Seed Match game, where we'll be identifying our fruits and vegetables before they go in the ground.

CORN HUSKING
AND KIDS COOKING DEMO


​Get ready, get set... grab an ear and go!

Join Wholesome Creations for this harvest time race: the corn husking race! Then stick around for a kids cooking demo as we'll learn how to make a delicious, healthy, organic succotash from scatch. 

THE ​SOIL ZONE

It all starts with soil! Stop by the Soil Zone for games and activities where you'll learn about and interact with the building blocks of healthy food: soil. Join the Sustainable Agriculture program from Santa Rosa Junior College together with the Sonoma and Gold Ridge Resource Conservation Districts and Natural Resources Conservation Service!


SOIL CONTEST! Farmers and gardeners, bring a sample from your own field, as they'll be giving out bronze, silver and gold medals as well as prizes for the best soil.

SPEED 
​SEEDING!

Nature doesn't wait and farming is anything but leisurely. Join the North Bay Flower Collective for this Speed Seeding competition. Those with the fastest, most nimble fingers will be crowned with laurels of organic, locally-grown flowers! Ready, set .... go!
