What is a Mentor Farmer? The Farmers Guild works to support a new generation of farmers and ranchers with the guidance and wisdom of those who know what it takes. Our mentors have worked hard to establish themselves in the world of agriculture and now want to help teach and cultivate the next generation. As a mentor, we invite you to join us at our monthly gatherings or to list your name as a local resource for your given expertise (chicken coops, no-till farming, livestock guardian dogs, CSA’s, etc) so that our Guild Members can ask for advice. And maybe you’ll even learn something from them too!
Why should I become a mentor?
With the average age of the American farmer at 58 (and rising each year), we'll need a new generation ready to inherit the long and vital legacy of those working the land to grow our food. With an interest in food and farming, a brand new wave of young people--many of them first generation farmers--are flocking to the world of agriculture, bringing with them passion, enthusiasm and new ideas. But to truly succeed, they'll need the real-world experience of those who've made it work. Come pass down your wisdom, tools, resources, and contribute to the future of food.
How do I join?
Is there a Farmers Guild in your neck of the woods? Check out our list of guilds to see if there is a monthly meet-up in your area and come by to say hello! All you have to do is bring your curiosity and a dish to share. And if you’re eager to get started right away, don’t wait until the next monthly gathering! If you’ve got a particular specialty or wisdom that you want to share with our member farmers, email [email protected] to find out the best way to participate.
