Water Efficiency Workshop for
Vineyards & Diversified Farms Tuesday April 14 8:30 to 11:30 am lunch provided after workshop Rose Ranch Kenwood, CA The Sonoma RCD is offering a LandSmart® workshop on agricultural water management and conservation in collaboration with the Community Alliance with Family Farmers and the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Keith Abeles, Sonoma RCD, will explain the irrigation system evaluation process and the importance of establishing good distribution uniformity to benefit crop production and maximize the efficient use of water. Tom Shapland, Tule Technologies, will demonstrate on-site evapotranspiration and vine stress monitoring using the surface renewal method. This technique has recently become commercially available to assist with efficient irrigation scheduling. Rachel Petitt, CAFF, will discuss water management practices, resources, and technical expertise available. Jodi Wilson, CSWA, will provide an overview of water management tools and resources, including an online metrics calculator to track water use and other BMPs found in the California Code of Sustainable Winegrowing. Ellen Hopkins, Zero Waste consultant, will demonstrate the compost system used at the ranch, and how it is utilized on-site to enhance soil tilth, plant health, and water retention. Steve Rose, Rose Ranch/Vineyards Inn Chef and owner will talk about holistic practices used at the farm including pasture management, compost and vermi-compost applications, and cover cropping.
