West Marin Sheep Dairy Seeking Applicants for 7-month Apprenticeship in 2016

Experience and abilities: Applicants must have some agricultural experience, preferably with livestock. Dairy experience is welcome but not required. Applicants must be physically strong and able to do physical ranch work, must be able to work independently and to follow hygiene protocols with care, and have a willingness to pitch in and do whatever needs to be done.
Dates and hours: Applicants must be able to commit to working for the entire lambing-milking season, from March 1 to September 30, 2016. The work-hours will vary: In March, when we are lambing, the apprentice will need to work 8-10 hours a day, 6 days/week, and to start at 5:00 am. In April and May, the apprentice work-week will be 8 hours/day, 5 days/week with a 6:30 am start-time, and in June – September the hours will be shorter (5 hours/day, 5 days/week, with 6:30 am start).

Duties will include but not be limited to: lambing (barn-checks, assisting with deliveries and related ewe and lamb care); rearing of orphan lambs; feeding of ewes, lambs, rams, hogs and horses; horse-care; milking shifts; sheep care (including vaccinating, worming, weighing lambs, trimming feet); barn-cleaning; vegetable gardening (small garden for personal use by all of us who live on the ranch); and removal of invasive plants, including thistles and French Broom.

Learning opportunity: This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual who wants to learn sheep-dairying on a small, farmstead operation, and who generally likes a variety of types of ranch work. The apprentice will work closely with the ranch’s two year-round employees as well as with the owner, who plays an active work-role in daily operations, but the apprentice will also be expected to work independently, once he or she has been trained in a task. We make an effort to vary the apprentice’s responsibilities, to optimize the learning experience, and also to be sure that the apprentice is adequately trained to fill in on whatever jobs need to be done. Housing and transportation: Housing is provided with a rent deduction (in a 1-year-old fully furnished Tiny House with full kitchen, bathroom and laundry, and all utilities and Wi-Fi included). Part-time, Non-Residential Orchard Manager at OAEC — 7 Hours/Week

The Occidental Arts & Ecology Center (OAEC) is seeking a part-time, non-residential Orchard Manager to work at OAEC for an average of 7 hours/week throughout the year. Depending on the season and the needs of the orchards, hours will vary week to week.

OAEC is a non-profit educational and advocacy institute working in the areas of ecology, watershed restoration, horticulture, the arts and social justice activism. OAEC is located on an 80-acre retreat facility and intentional community, 65 miles north of San Francisco in western Sonoma County, California.
Job Summary:The Orchard Manager will serve as the primary person responsible for tending the fruit trees at OAEC. The Orchard Manager, with direction from and in consultation with the Orchard Supervisor, will formulate annual budgets, prune trees, harvest fruit and perform integrated pest management (IPM) plans. The Orchard Manager is also responsible for hiring and managing pruning help as well as coordinating volunteers on Wednesday Volunteer Days.
Job Responsibilities:

• Prune and train orchard trees and vines during both winter and summer months.
• Hire and manage pruning help during peak pruning times.
• Check and clean out barn owl box annually.
• Help manage burn piles of prunings during winter months; coordinate burn days with OAEC gardeners.
• Protect frost tender plants during winter months.
• Help diversify the orchard collection; plant/graft new varieties of trees and vines, as appropriate; consult with OAEC staff andcommunity on new tree types and varieties most appropriate to the property.
• Irrigate new and young trees and vines to get them established and help them thrive.
• Monitor and manage orchard pests and disease codling moth, apple maggot fly, birds, rodents, fire blight, scab and powdery mildew using an integrated pest management strategy. Use monitoring traps to track various pest populations.
• Thin fruit as needed, and stake trees with heavy fruit loads to prevent limbs from breaking.
• Harvest and store fruit for OAEC kitchen and community; pack boxes of excess fruit for the food bank and for various events; juice or process excess fruit when appropriate.
• Communicate and coordinate with Kitchen Manager about fruit harvests for kitchen staff to utilize on a weekly basis.
• Weed, mulch, amend and cover crop orchards as needed. Clean up ground fall, prunings and leaves for orchard sanitation and disease/insect prevention as needed. Weed-whack tall grasses in orchards when necessary; remove blackberries as needed.
• Work with volunteers on Wednesdays to help accomplish tasks and get big projects done.
• Join the Orchard Committee and meet with Orchard Committee and other departments as needed.
• Develop an annual orchard budget, work plan and work calendar and present to the Orchard Committee; weigh and log fruit harvest yields through the year to present to orchard committee annually.
• Remove and replace underproductive fruit trees and vines with more desirable cultivars.

Qualifications for the Job:

• Interest in, passion for, and commitment to ecologically appropriate tree care.
• Minimum of three years of professional pruning experience.  Also experience with any or all of the following skills: fruit thinning, fruit harvesting, tree maintenance, IPM organic pest control, plant health care, light carpentry, irrigation set-up, etc.
• Knowledge of what wood different fruit trees and vines flower on, as well as pollination requirements.
• Willingness to taste a diverse array of fruit to check for ripeness when picking.
• Proven ability to effectively and harmoniously manage personnel and work with Volunteers.
• Demonstrated ability to improvise, work with non-standard materials, and be creative in coming up with solutions to problems.
• Fluency in using email, Word, Excel, web browsers, and other basic computer software to write documents, help with budgets, record keep and communicate regularly with other staff.
  Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and safely, and manage one’s own hours.
• Ability to receive and provide constructive feedback, and make changes to align with and contribute to OAEC’s values and culture.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task and work with many other staff and residents.
• Desire and understanding of working as part of a collectively-run organization.

Compensation:This is a part-time, non-residential position at an hourly rate (TBD). Part-time OAEC staff can use the OAEC facilities (pond, hot tub, and sauna) and harvest from our gardens and orchards.

The short of it is that Early Bird Farm, in Nevada City, is looking to hire a farm hand for 18-24 hours per week at $10/hour, starting immediately, working into the winter and through next season. If this piques your interest, much more information follows.

Early Bird Farm is finishing up our first growing season. There are two of us, Stu and Drew. We run a small vegetable farm in Nevada City on Newtown Road. We also do grain milling and a small number of animals.

Your job will mostly be working alongside me doing the following: planting, weeding, bed preparation, harvesting, washing, packing, delivery, building, other less frequent farm tasks

While you will mostly be working alongside me, some days I may be out for the morning doing office work and you will be expected to take care of tasks on your own while I’m away. Additionally, I’ll be gone for over a month from November 18 through Christmas, so you’ll need to be trained up by this time so you can work alongside Drew and on your own to keep the operation going.

You must have good physical energy so that you can spend up to four hours doing the same task such as weeding or washing and bagging produce. There will also be some more strenuous work but there are always less demanding tasks to do if you need a break from the strenuous work. If you have a special skill or area of interest you would like to explore we can definitely arrange that, such as if you wanted to help us out with our website, social media, sales, etc, we can definitely make that happen.

We have the longer-term goal of becoming a worker-owned cooperative. Garden Internship at The Occidental Arts & Ecology Center (OAEC) 

We offer two 9-month internship positions in our 42-year-old biointensive organic gardens. The gardens are a rich setting for experiential learning. Interns learn all aspects of gardening while working closely with OAEC’s Garden Manager Michelle Vesser. We are looking for those who really want to learn from the Mother Garden and take their experience out into the world.

Internship Details

• The work week is 25 hours. In return, interns are given a private place to live, use of all the facilities onsite, and free participation in OAEC courses on a space available basis.
• OAEC garden interns work full days Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, March 1 through November 22.
• One of the ways interns participate in the life of the residential community is through contributing to the regular cooking and chore rotations. In contribution to the community dinner schedule, each community member and intern cooks dinner once every two weeks.

Garden interns are involved in all aspects of gardening, including:

• Propagation and greenhouse work

• Composting
• Transplanting

Fire Tongue Farm is a brand-new organic chile farm located in Hollister, CA. It specializes in growing 12 varieties of chile peppers that are sold fresh and smoked. It is owned and operated by friends Ryan Silsbee and Levon Minassian. 

We would like interns to help us with operations at our organic chile pepper farm in Hollister. We would consider interns to be part of our team of two farmers and would highly value their opinions and suggestions for improving our young business. 

We need help with operations oriented aspects of our farm including but not limited to weeding, harvesting, and sorting peppers so that we can smoke them in our smokehouse. We would also be interested in interns who have an interest in marketing and that can help filling orders for our farmers markets and restaurant orders.

About SAGE: SAGE (Sustainable Agriculture Education) is a small, entrepreneurial non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating urban-edge places where farming and local food culture can thrive and be celebrated. SAGE regenerates agricultural places that define and sustain cities in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. As a lean, entrepreneurial organization, we convene partners to collaborate on innovative projects, including public agencies, farmers, educators, conservationists, health experts, economists, planners, public-interest organizations, and community groups in urban and rural areas.

About the Sunol AgPark: The Sunol Agricultural Park is located on an 18-acre parcel in Sunol on land owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Eight small farming enterprises farm on the land. SAGE manages the farm site with a focus on natural resource stewardship, and engages in public engagement through the formal education program and through public events and volunteer days. SAGE has been implementing its AgPark education programs since 2008 for target audiences: field trips for elementary school groups, service and project-based learning for middle and high school students and non-school youth groups, and work day, field days and tours for the general public.

Position Overview

SAGE is seeking two to three experienced agricultural/environmental educators to teachFarming in the Watershed curriculum to 4th – 8th grade classes at the Sunol AgPark. The curriculum, available online at http://www.sagecenter.org/resources/publications, has 18 lessons in 3 units that provide students an engaging on-farm learning experience. The field trips draw most heavily from 2-3 specific lessons.

Field trips for 4th – 8th grade groups generally run from 10 am to 1 pm and include an introductory farm tour, a Farming in the Watershed lesson, and a hands-on farm activity, spaced around a snack/lunch break. Teachers lead a group of around 15 students per field trip. Teaching some in-school classes for elementary school students and some service-learning classes for older students may also be possible.

Position Responsibilities

Educators work collaboratively with Education Coordinator and other experienced naturalist educators in coordinating a farm experience for 4th through 8th grade students. Specifically:

• Co-teach lessons from the Farming in the Watershed curriculum and lead hands-on farm activities for 15-20 students, in collaboration with AgPark farmers
• Lead students on a tour of the farm while discussing various environmental and agricultural aspects of the AgPark and farming in general
• Work collaboratively with school teachers and parents/chaperons in group management of classes
• Assist in preparing farm site for lessons/activities and cleaning up after activities
• Contribute to program evaluation and development

Qualifications and Experience

• At least 3 years of experience teaching agricultural and/or environmental education programs for diverse audiences of school-age children
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
• Excellent communications skills, professionalism and interpersonal skills

California Farm Academy Seeks Program Director


The Center for Land‐Based Learning inspires and motivates people of all ages, especially youth, to promote a healthy interplay between agriculture, nature and society through their actions and as leaders in their communities. We serve high schools students and adults through our experiential programs in 20 California counties and at our Farm on Putah Creek educational site near Winters, CA. Our California Farm Academy beginning farmer training program and farm business incubator has provided hands-on education, mentorship, land for lease and marketing support for over 80 new farmers to date.

Background: In February 2012, the first session of the California Farm Academy (CFA) beginning farmer training program launched with 20 adult students of all ages and backgrounds. Every year since, through a combination of lectures, hands-on field work and farm visits, as well as learning from over 30 guest speakers from academia, industry and agricultural agencies, student-farmers are given a condensed, practical head start to their farming careers. Graduates leave with a network of resources and mentors, a farm business plan they created during the program, and opportunities to access land. Specifically, in the CFA farm business incubator, graduates and other qualified farmers are leased land in either rural or urban settings and provided infrastructure, tools and technical and marketing assistance to start or improve their agricultural enterprise. Over seventy-five percent of CFA graduates are farming.

Land-Based Learning is hiring a Program Director, based at our main office at 5265 Putah Creek Road, Winters CA, at the Farm on Putah Creek. This position will be responsible for continuing the existing training and incubator programs; supervising 3 full-time CFA staff; writing and managing grants; creating and updating annual program budgets; working with an Advisory Committee of agricultural professionals, farmers and educators; launching an urban farm in a development currently under construction at The Cannery in Davis, CA; working with our West Sacramento urban farming program to oversee farm sites, expand marketing opportunities and explore aggregation; and, in partnership with another farmer training organization, developing an accredited farm apprenticeship program. If you’ve worked at other Beginning Farmer and/or Incubator programs, this is an opportunity to utilize your experience and take the highly successful California Farm Academy to the next level. Ecological Ranch Manager Wanted


The Ranch Manager is responsible for maintaining Bobcat Ranch as an environmentally and ecologically sustainable working cattle ranch that provides opportunities to better understand and communicate the ecological benefits that targeted management activities and restoration efforts can support.

The Ranch Manager is required to live on-site in housing provided by Audubon as a condition of employment, and to provide a regular presence at the ranch. The Ranch Manager will be the first point of contact in the event of emergencies.  Housing is provided in a ranch-style house built in approximately 1955 and updated more recently. It consists of 1,000 square feet of living space, including a kitchen and livingroom, one bathroom and two bedrooms. The employee is required to keep the residence in good condition and carry out routine maintenance as needed. Gas/electricity and garbage are paid by Audubon, and land-line telephone and internet service are split between Ranch Manager and Audubon. 

This positon is part-time, 20 hours a week, but may be expanded to a full-time position as funding becomes available and job responsibilities expand.

Essential Functions:
The Ranch Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations for Bobcat Ranch, managing all ranch activities and contractual obligations in coordination with Audubon California’s state program.

Property Management

• Control access to property and prevent trespassing
• Provide access agreements and safety for all visitors
• Carry out or oversee all property improvements as necessary—fire breaks, plumbing, heating, home improvements, etc. including writing and managing appropriate contractual agreements needed
• Research and evaluate expansion of grazing operation to western portion of property
• Complete all relevant paperwork such as annual taxes, bill payment, necessary contracts, reports, etc.
• Recruit and employ volunteer crews as needed
• Carry out annual RDM measurements
• Control noxious weeds
• Coordinate with neighbors on all access issues

Research Coordination

• Manage access for all existing research projects and communicate progress and results internally
• Coordinate with internal science staff to ensure research supports Audubon’s land management and wildlife questions

Networking/Partnering

• Develop and maintain relationships with partners, including but not limited to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, UC Cooperative Extension, conservation partners and grazing lessees
• Collaborate with and maintain regular communication with Audubon California
• Consult on management of Audubon’s other ranches as needed

Project Management

• Complete water development and fencing under 2014 NRCS EQIP contract
• Manage grazing lease: quarterly reports, monitoring of AUM, overseeing rotation, communications about improvements
• Manage boundary fence repair

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in range management, natural resources management or related field.  Equivalent combination of education and experience also considered.
• At least 3 years range management experience including contract management.
• Familiarity with range landscapes and their ecological values, especially for wildlife and water quality.
• Knowledge and appreciation of current rangeland conservation issues.
• Strong judgment and decision-making ability, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience carrying out building and equipment maintenance and the ability to manage complex projects.
• Significant experience working with grazers and government programs and a dedication to all aspects of responsible land stewardship.
• Ability to work easily and effectively with a wide range of people, build relationships, be diplomatic and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the dynamics of a complex organization.

Garden/Farm Manager Opportunity Available in Sebastopol, CA

We (my wife and I) live on about 4 acres on Fredricks Road in S. Sebastopol with about 2.5 acres dedicated to agriculture (small vineyard, garden, fruit trees, chicken run). A friend has spent over 3½ years (full time) to convert part (+¼ acre) of our old vineyard into an organic vegetable garden and has been selling his produce at a neighborhood stand along our lane. He has installed a fairy elaborate watering system, built a greenhouse, put up a perimeter fence and has gradually nurtured the soil toward a state of good health (no till method). But now he is moving on and we’re looking for a replacement.

The water comes from an old artesian well on the hillside above the garden with gravity flow into a secondary tank with a low pressure pump. It has been more than adequate for row crops over the whole ¼ acre and then some. The soil has been improved considerably over the 3½ years with a range of organic amendments and thoughtful cover cropping as part of the rotation. It is essentially a "plug and play" operation.

We are very interested in finding someone with energy and enthusiasm to keep the project going (and possibly expanding it). We are very willing to allow the selected garden manager to benefit completely from the sale of produce and we are otherwise negotiable about the financial aspects of the project.

The Permaculture Skills Center (PSC) is a 5-acre demonstration site and educational institution dedicated to sharing regenerative land development and management practices. We are located in Sebastopol, California. 

We are a 3 year old mission-driven company which hosts educational workshops and tours, sustainability related community events and our two vocational training programs – the Ecological Landscaper Immersion (ELI) and Farm School (FS) – all of which use the site as a living learning classroom.

Familiarity with farm machinery and equipment operations is desired but not required.

The preferred applicant must make a commitment for the full term of one season, and will be given preference if he or she is competent to take on increased responsibility for farm operations and management over time, including staying on for multiple years. Farm Manager Duties:

• Reporting to the CEO/Executive Director, the Farm Manager will plan, support and coordinate all farm activities to establish production priorities in keeping with effective operations.
  
• The Farm Manager will work collaboratively with our Enrichment Coordinator and Farm Program Assistant to provide the necessary crops and tools to run our resident enrichment activities related to the farm. These include our Farm Night dinners, Weekly Farm Stand, and other farm related opportunities. 
  

Specific duties include:

• Planting – create a schedule to maximize crops for farm stand and restaurant needs.
  
• Harvesting – weekly for farm stand and restaurant sales. Monitor and maintain the quality and yield of crops.

Qualifications:

• At least 1 year experience running a farm, maintaining an annual mixed vegetable production field, ideally in northern California.

The Farm Staff position involves working in all aspects of the farm. Responsibilities

Dynamic Farm Position: First Light Farm

First Light Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm.  We are committed to creating a better future for ourselves and our community though sound agricultural and business practices.  We grow a wide range of produce and have a wide diversity of markets, CSA, Farmers’ Markets, Farm Stand, and Wholesale. We have two growing sites, one three miles West of Petaluma, the other ten miles West of that in Valley Ford.  It is a total of almost 20 acres of vegetables. 

We are looking for a highly motivated and energetic worker who has several years of farming experience.  This is a full time position that will include, but is not limited to:

• CSA administration: This will consist of communicating with CSA members.  Orienting and welcoming new members, answering all questions and solving problems as they arise.  Most of this will be done through email.  You will also promote the CSA with various marketing strategies.

• Farm Store management: Opening and closing the Farm Stand every day, keeping inventory up and in good shape, and keeping the place clean and organized.  Also welcoming customers when you are around and answering their questions.

• Deliveries: CSA box deliveries on Wednesdays as well as other deliveries that may arise.

• Field labor: Work with the crew or on your own in the field for extended periods of time. This position will be dynamic and demand a broad range of skills.  You will be working at many levels and should learn lot about how we function as a farm and as a business.  Each day you will open and close the farm stand and do CSA communications. That should take roughly half of your time.  Other than that, each day will be a little different.  Wednesday you will spend the day delivering CSA boxes, Saturday and Sunday you will often be the only person on the farm and will have projects to complete and will need to be able to manage your time well.  Thursday and Friday will likely be spent working in the fields with the crew or by yourself.
