Local Crops in High Demand: Farmers, Get Growing!

3/27/2015

During this week's successful Farmer/Buyer Mixer, where we brought together dozens of local farmers and chefs, grocers and ranchers, food distributors and new agrarians ready to grow our next meal here in the North Bay, we asked all the food buyers: Which crops do you wish you could source more easily from local farmers? In other words, all you farmers, if you're getting ready to plant and sell to local food businesses this year, here are a few safe bets:
  • Hot peppers
  • Dino Kale
  • Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Lemon Grass
  • Sweet Corn
  • Organic strawberries
  • Rice

  • Organic raspberries
  • Celery
  • Scallions
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Lentils
  • Black Beans
  • And a whole list of specialty herbs!

This is the season for farm tours to Kokopelli Farm, which is slightly up from Hardcore Coffee south of Sebastopol. We had a group of 16 ag students from the Santa Rosa Junior College here yesterday and some people of Daily Acts' Community Resilience program are coming this morning. We have two kinds of tours--one for an hour or so for those who want to visit a farm and a longer one for those wanting a hands-on work experience. Those who participate in the volunteer work are then eligible to be hired during the early morning boysenberry picking during June and July. More information available from Shepherd at 707-829-8185 or [email protected].
