DAY ONE SUMMIT SCHEDULE: WEDNESDAY

9 AM

FOOD SAFETY 1: Does FSMA Apply to Your Farm?

Farms subject to FSMA will need to start complying in January 2018 to new Food Safety Modernization Act rules. Is your farm one of them? In this workshop we'll explore what makes a farm fully exempt from the law, partially exempt, or fully subject. Learn how to prepare for future inspections and get an overview of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs).

Kali Feiereisel, Food Safety Specialists CAFF
CLIMATE SMART FARMING

With the uncertain impacts of climate change hanging over every farm and ranch in California, find out how CAFF is working with growers and ranchers to improve soil health and decrease their farm's carbon footprint. We'll have interactive demonstrations of important soil health indicators and wrap up the workshop with questions and discussion about soil health and climate smart farming at the local level.

Jessica Chiartas, Soil Life
Sara Tiffany, Climate Smart Farming Specialist CAFF

10:30 AM
FARM COOPERATIVES

Want to start, expand, or pass on a farm? (That's about everyone, right?) Learn about the cooperative business model and how it applies to financing, labor, distribution, succession, and other vital aspects of farming.

Mai Nguyen is a heritage grain farmer and the Cooperative Development Specialist at the California Center for Cooperative Development.
FARM MARKETING ROUNDTABLE

The Marketing Roundtable will feature 3-5 experienced farmers from the San Diego area who will gather to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of particular markets. Our featured farmers will reveal lessons learned along the way and provide tips for farmers trying to expand their markets. Outlets included in this discussion will be retail, distributors, on-line sales, restaurants. CSA's and Farmers Markets.

Justin Grossman, Farm to Market Specialist CAFF
Phil Noble, Sage Mountain Farm
Bob Knight, Old Grove Oranges
Al Stehly, Stehly Grove Management
Nicholas Jasquez, Three Sons Farm

NOON: LUNCH

1 PM
FARM-TO-INSTITUTION 101

There is a large and growing institutional food market for local growers to connect with. However, there are also challenges in both making that connection and developing sales relationships with institutions. This workshop will provide growers an understanding into what strategies will serve them best in selling to schools and other institutional buyers. Topics will include the basics of navigating the institutional market, best practices in working with institutions, regulations to consider, successful business and marketing strategies, and local examples.

Prem Durairaj, Food Systems and Research Director at Community Health Improvement Partners; Noel Stehly from Stehly’s Farm, Sally Spero; Food Service Director, Lakeside Union Elementary; and Melanie Moyer, Menu Systems Development Dietitian, San Diego Unified

FOOD & FARM POLICY

The success of your farm and of sustinable agricultural more generally depends not only on the boot-strapping perseverance of lone agrarians, but also on the context in which we farm. Regulations, subsidies, trade laws and other policies can either make or break family farms like ours. But can the voice of small-scale agrarians and local food communities be heard over the din of high-paid lobbyists and politicians far removed from the field? In this interactive workshop, find out what it takes to be effective in policy reform, getting the attention of policymakers and building strong alliances.

Eric Larson, San Diego Farm Bureau
Dave Runston, Policy Director CAFF

3:00 PM
COASTAL ROOTS FARM TOUR

Coastal Roots Farm is a community farm and education center that nourishes connections between people, food, and the land. The farm consists of 20 acres of food forest, vegetable gardens, compost, a plant nursery, a vineyard, and animal pastures, all in various stages of development. Their food is distributed through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, on-site Farm Stand, pop-up farm stands around North County San Diego, and direct donations to local hunger relief organizations.

Daron 'Farmer D’ Joffe, Director of Agricultural Innovation and Development at the Leichtag Foundation

FOOD SAFETY 2: Food Safety Hot Topics Q & A

CAFF is prepared to discuss FSMA, GAPs, school food regulations, Value Added Product regulations (cottage food, processed food registration permits) and more. We will focus on the food safety topics of most interest by audience members and will adapt how we spend time based on attendee questions and interests.

Kali Feiereisel, Food Safety Specialists CAFF

HAPPY HOUR

Mix and mingle with fellow farmers and food advocates over drinks while learning about the many local resources and technical assistance providers around San Diego that are there to support farmers like you.

6 PM

DINNER & KEYNOTE:

Bob Knight, Old Grove Orange
Bob Knight, a long-time citrus and kiwi grower, is now, with the advent of global warming, drought, and the asian citrus psyllid, eagerly diversifying his 85-acre SoCal farm into mixed vegetables, berries, figs, and grapes.  Having been a cog in the global food system as a grower for and the manager of a Sunkist packinghouse, he now is focused on direct-to-market channels.  He started one of SoCal’s earliest CSAs, and along with Rodney Taylor, was a pioneer of the Farm-2-School movement.  Besides farming, he founded and runs Old Grove Orange, a for-profit hub of 16 SoCal farmers serving 17 school districts feeding 600,000 kids.  Each year he meets with about 13,000 of his customers, 35 at a time, to talk about farming and how eating lots of fruits and vegetables can give you superpowers.

7 PM

FILM SCREENING:
EVOLUTION OF ORGANIC

From filmmaker Mark Kitchell (Berkeley in the Sixties, A Fierce Green Fire) comes a new film: EVOLUTION of ORGANIC, the story of organic agriculture, told by those who built the movement. A motley crew of back-to-the-landers, spiritual seekers and farmers’ sons and daughters reject chemical farming and set out to explore organic alternatives. It’s a heartfelt journey of change – from a small band of rebels to a cultural transformation in the way we grow and eat food. By now organic has gone mainstream, split into an industry oriented toward bringing organic to all people and a movement that has realized a vision of sustainable agriculture. It’s the most popular and successful outgrowth of the environmental impulse of the last fifty years.
